A Message from Pastor
We are starting up our Sunday School and Adult Bible class this Sunday at 9:45 to 10:45am! I am so excited to dive into the Word in class together. A HUGE thank you to all of our Sunday School teachers and faculty, they do a marvelous job teaching our children in a fun and engaging way. Please make time to come to Bible class if you are there on Sunday, and if you have interest in a certain topic, or even teaching some classes, let me know!

TRANSFER THE BLESSINGS: Tax-Free Sale
Howard and Lynn were age 55 when they purchased some land outside of town. They thought it would be a worthwhile investment that they could later sell for a higher price. Over the years, development from town has moved toward the property and their land is now next to a large
commercial store. They now rent the property to the commercial store for overflow parking.
Howard: We have owned this property for over 10 years. It has been a sound investment and increased in value. We have received just enough rental income in the last few years to pay the taxes. However, we now would like to sell.
Lynn: It would be nice if we could sell without paying a large tax. Our tax advisor has told us that if we were to sell, there would be a large capital gains tax. We also could use some tax deductions this year.
The good news is that Howard and Lynn were able to create a special trust called a charitable remainder unitrust and receive three nice benefits.

Increase income ( select 5%, 5 ½%, 6% or 6 ½% paid annually)
Charitable deduction
After 20 years, the remaining investment will be gifted to St. Andrews Lutheran Church
Howard: We are delighted with our unitrust. With our unitrust, we saved about $36,000 in capital gains tax and almost $18,000 in income taxes. That is over $54,000 in tax savings!
Lynn: Plus, we increased our income. The land was producing almost no income before. Now, we receive over $12,000 in income each year for 20 years. This increased income is one of my favorite parts of the plan.

FOOD PANTRY UPDATE: 138 households visited the St Paul of the Cross food pantry in July. Most needed items are cold cereal, pancake mix and syrup, and WHITE rice (l lb.). Thank you for your continuing support!

MISSION OF THE MONTH: Lutheran Blind Mission, our Mission of the Month, addresses the spiritual and social needs of blind and visually impaired people through the outreach centers it created in participating congregations. The centers are designed to assist blind and low vision individuals by offering such things as computer and job training, lessons on reading Braille, workshops on topics of interest, Bible studies, and a free monthly meal for attendees and their families. Annually, each blind outreach center reaches an average of 25 or more people –a group of folks that often feel forgotten or isolated, this according to Lisa Watts, Lutheran Blind Mission director of outreach centers. Watts, who herself has limited vision, tells us that congregations that operate such centers “reach out with love, compassion, resources, support, and of course, most importantly, the unconditional love of Christ for each of us.”

JOHN LUTHERAN: St. John's Lutheran School in Chicago celebrates its 150th Anniversary on Sunday, October 11, with a celebratory worship service at 9:00 am, followed by an Open House of the facility and a banquet at Chateau Ritz in Niles.
